"I care about food systems, but where do I fit?"
This is one of the most common messages I get.
Someone has a background in science, policy, communications, business, education, or community work. They care deeply about building a more sustainable, equitable food system. But they do not know what roles to search for, what organizations to target, or how their skills translate.
It is a real problem. And it exists because sustainable food is not a single industry with a clear career ladder. It is an ecosystem: sprawling, interdisciplinary, and full of jobs that do not always have "sustainability" in the title.
So here is a framework for figuring out where you fit.
Step 1: Understand your strengths and instincts
Before you look at job boards, start with yourself.
Our Career Quiz is designed to help you identify your professional persona in sustainable food, whether you are a Connector, a Builder, an Innovator, a Strategist, or an Advocate.
Across 201 quiz responses so far, 35% of people are Connectors, drawn to building relationships and coalitions. 30% are Builders, focused on creating programs, products, and organizations. 18% are Innovators, 9% are Strategists, and 6% are Advocates.
Knowing your persona does not limit you. It gives you a starting point: a way to understand what kinds of roles and organizations will naturally fit the way you think and work.
Step 2: Map a career pathway
Once you have a sense of your strengths, the next question is: what does an actual career in this field look like?
Our Career Pathway Tool analyzes your preferences alongside 100 real job postings from our board to recommend roles that fit you, the skills employers are actively seeking, open positions that match your goals, and resources and organizations to explore. It is grounded in what employers are actually looking for right now, not generic advice.
From there, your Job Search Roadmap is your personalized dashboard for tracking applications, building career pathways, and managing networking and saved resources all in one place.
This matters because the path into sustainable food is rarely linear. A food policy career might start in community organizing, move through advocacy, and land in government. A regenerative agriculture career might begin on a farm, move through supply chain, and end in corporate sustainability. These tools help you see the shape of the field and track your own progress through it.
Step 3: See the whole ecosystem
Finally, zoom out. Before you commit to a direction, it helps to understand the full landscape of organizations, roles, and talent in the field.
Our Talent Ecosystem Map is a visual guide to the sustainable food talent ecosystem, showing how organizations, sectors, and functions connect. It is the bird's-eye view that helps you understand not just where you might fit today, but where the field is moving.
Combined with the Organization Guide, which lets you explore 750+ organizations by sector, category, and region, you can go from "I care about food" to "I understand the landscape and know where I want to contribute".
You do not have to figure it out alone
The hardest part of entering a new field is not the lack of jobs. It is the lack of a map.
That is what these tools are for. They will not tell you exactly what to do, but they will help you ask better questions, see more options, and make decisions based on the actual shape of the field rather than assumptions.
Start with the Career Quiz. Then explore a pathway. Then look at the ecosystem map.
Your place in sustainable food is there. You just have to know where to look.
Thanks for being here :)
